When listening to the young Alvin Youngblood Hart, the word authenticity comes to mind. In this offering of "Gallows Pole" (or "Gallis Pole", as Leadbelly recorded it), he gives voice to the condemned. His lament seems to absorb its misery from centuries-old celtic oppression and funnel it through the African-American experience on this continent.
